Thrilling Third Graders~ Aphrodite Hearts

Third graders created hearts not just for Valentine's Day but in honor of the ancient Greek Goddess of love, Aphrodite!
She was known for her beauty, but she was also quite the troublemaker!

These turned out fantastic and proved to be a fun project for the skilled cutters in class.

We discussed the use of positive and negative space,
ABBY M.
ARIANNA
and also choosing colors for hearts and backgrounds.

Krazy Kinders~ Collage Snowmen

I love doing this project every year with the Kinders. Who doesn't love a snowman?
Brook
For some, it's their first experience with collage so they can get a bit crazy with the materials provided, but they all turn out very unique!
 Kyle
This one looks a bit sad :(
Dylan
Mackie
Then of course we have our glamour girls above and below with the eyelashes!
Nicole
Bradley
Lovin' this guy with the mustache and attitude. It's almost as if he's saying "Whaddya lookin' at??"

Spectacular Second Graders~ Arachne and her Web!

Did you ever wonder how the spider got it's name (Arachnid)?
Second graders learned about the ancient Greek myth of Athena and Arachne.
If you have a second grader, ask them the story, it's quite bazaar and they love to tell it!
Charlie
We spent time practicing drawing spider webs which was easier than they thought.
Ella
Luke
White oil pastel was used on their final drawing and then we painted them with water color.
But wait, there's more! Before our paintings dried we sprinkled salt all over them.

The art room floor was like walking on a sandy beach for a week, but it was totally worth it for them to see the effect of the salt on the wet paper. Many thought it looked like frost on a car window.

Check out these fancy webs!

Feisty Fifth Graders~ Back to the Future!

Fifth graders had the tricky task of bringing an ancient Greek figure into the future!
Ashlyn
Tricky, because their subject still had to look like they were from ancient Greece but be doing something, or be somewhere, in the future.
Emma
They had so many great ideas and they were even able to back them up through drawing. We had many professional sports players, mall shoppers and even race car drivers!
Leanna
I love how Athena is a modern day school teacher; after all, she was the goddess of wisdom!
Sam
Christina
This guy is enjoying his xbox time....
...and this one is killing it on the court!

Kennedy
Matthew
We had one join a heavy metal band,
Paul
and of course, one doing the "Gangnam Greek Style"!
Fifth graders did a wonderful job with such an open ended idea project. Some chose to keep their drawing black and white due to detail and some used color. In the end, they were required to write a few sentences about their subject. They had to give them a Greek name, tell what year they were from and what they ended up doing in the future.

Fabulous Fourth graders~ Positive & Negative Space Winter Scene

Fourth graders studied the diffrence between positive and negative space and how artists apply them in their art work. It's still very much winter here so we created a winter scene.

Fantastic First Graders~ Halycon Birds

In ancient Greece, it was believed that the Halcyon bird (known as the common Kingfisher today) had the powers to calm the waves in order to build her nest and lay her eggs on the sea. Say what??
Anyhow, we were intrigued by the story, but mostly by the birds beautiful colors.
First graders used acrylic paint, feathers and decorative paper to create their Halcyon bird.
