"Son of Man" by Rene Magritte Parody!

"Son of Man" by Rene Magritte 1964

Eagle View artists created a parody of Magritte's "Son of Man"!
Some used famous characters and other used the same mysterious figure in the his original painting.
I love how their favorites and life interests show through in their choices!

"Son of Olaf" :)

Wow, someone chose me!

Spectacular Second Graders~ Kandinsky Planets!

Second graders also studied the paintings of Wassily Kandinsky. We learned that Kandinsky was born with an extra special "sixth sense" named Synesthesia, a rare but real neurological phenomenon that let him hear colors!
Because of that, both music and color had a huge impact on his art. He was especially fond of circles and after looking at his paintings we thought they reminded us of planets in our solar system!
{"Unbroken Line" 1923}
First, we created an abstract painting using many colors and painting tools including scrapers and rubber band brushes!
{"Blue Painting Vasily Kandinsky"1866}
Our planets were cut from our Abstract paintings and glued to a background where we added rings, and pastel stars and comets.

The results were amazing!

Spectacular Second Graders~ Evergreen Branches!

In second grade we studied the colossal sequoias and learned about General Sherman, the largest tree in the world at over 374 t. tall!

Using crayon, tempera paint and oil pastel we created our own wintry sequoia branch

To finish it off we painted with liquid watercolor and before it dried we sprinkled salt over top to create the lovely background designs.

Spectacular Second Graders~ Sea Turtles & Salt!

 Second graders studied sea turtles. From Loggerheads to Leatherbacks, we learned so much!
Turtle shells, heads and flippers were first drawn on white boards to practice.
The designs and patterns they came up with were amazing!
Turtles were then drawn on paper and colored in with oil pastel. The sea was then painted in with watercolor. Before the paint was dry we sprinkled on the salt!
The students compared the outcome of the dried salt with frosted car windows in the morning!

There were so many beautiful turtles to display!

Spectacular Second Graders~ Van Gogh Sunflowers

Second Graders met were introduced to Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers series
Vincent Van Gogh 1889

They were fascinated by Mr. Van Gogh's story and even more with a simple flower he spent so much time studying.
 Backgrounds were painted first and time was taken to practice drawing different vase shapes.
 After vases were painted they planned how many flowers they wanted to paint and started with the centers and then the petals.
 Seeds and stems were painted last and when the flowers are completely dry they used a white oil pastel on the petals for highlights.
Well done Second Graders!

Spectacular Second Graders~ Spring Sheep!

Spring finally arrived around these parts and we decided it was time for some blue sky and green grass!

Second Graders used painters tape to mask off their fence and made fabulous watercolor skies. They used acrylic green and yellow paint dabbed on with fingers to make a beautiful grassy field and then tempera and brushes to make wildflowers!
I love how the sheep turned out too, we had baby sheep and even some who decided to color them completely black for black sheep!
